We have been very busy since I have gotten home from New York. Addie and Reed are playing soccer (different teams) and Reed has already started Baseball for the city. I had heard that city league ball was much more competitive than the YMCA and they were not joking. Reed is the cutest baseball player but he isn’t the best. He has so much to learn and improve on, but he has a good attitude and has great coaches to teach him. I love the fact that he has four coaches that are all kind and help out with the team. These dads are great role models not just for Reed, but for all the boys on the team. Soccer has been fun- Reed and Addie have improved and I have enjoyed coaching them once again. After coaching select soccer for over 10 years I came to the conclusion that sports are way out of control in society currently. It is so over the top competitive way too young and takes all the joy out of learning the sport in a fun environment.I thought I could make a difference by keeping it all in perspective and teaching them discipline and the love of the sport. That all worked perfectly until we won the league in the top competitive bracket then the parents started to want all different goals then we orginally set for the team. Now winning at all cost became the primary goal and things started getting out of control with certain parents offering me thousands of dollars to get us in more tournaments and wanting to sponsor the team and getting certain kids off the team (even if their kid was best friends with them from playing with them so long) that they felt were good enough. At this point I knew it was time for me to look into other areas to volunteer as my heart wasn’t in it anymore. You’ll see some of the best coaches with their hearts in the right place gracefully leave as the kids get older. Whose to blame for all this I’m not sure but parents quickly lose sight of the true benefits of sports. You’ve got the perfect attitude with no caring if he is the best and appreciating he is learning a ton and having a ball currently.
